Worm castings, also known as vermicompost, are a nutrient-rich, gentle fertilizer that improves soil structure and supports microbial life. You can find it at most garden centers or order it online directly from producers.

Seaweed you can forage and rinse thoroughly, dry, crush and store (or buy kelp meal online).

Potash (wood ash) you can choose to apply later as a topdressing at the end of the vegetative phase. If you’re using bottom watering, let the soil dry out for 24–48 hours, then water from the top a few times to help the potash soak into the root zone. Be cautious, potash is highly concentrated and can burn plant roots ”less is more”. Ensure that it comes from clean wood. Can also be purchased online.

Natural Boosters: Banana Water and Seaweed Tea

No kelp meal or potash? Try these homemade alternatives:

  • Banana water: Soak organic banana peels in water for 1–2 weeks
  • Seaweed tea: Soak dried seaweed overnight in water

⚠️ Watch for smell – and only use these teas for soil watering, not as foliar sprays, to avoid fungal issues.

Let It Rest

For best results, mix your soil 1–2 weeks before use.
This gives time for microbial life to activate and for pH and nutrients to stabilize – especially important if you’re using fresh compost or lime.

When Is This Mix Enough?

This soil mix typically supports the full lifecycle of:

  • Dwarf and compact varieties
  • Smaller chili, tomato and cucumber plants
  • Any crop grown in large containers or raised beds

If your plants grow large or start showing signs of nutrient deficiency – especially during flowering and fruiting – you can top up with extra organic nutrition.

Ready to Mix?

Make a big batch and store it in a sealed container.

It will keep moisture and microbial life stable – and your plants will reward you with stronger roots, healthier growth, and less need for external fertilizers.
